“Burn them down” | Some want Peppertree Apartments gone for good

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — “When are they going to shut those apartments down. It’s a nuisance,” a woman told WREG Tuesday night.

People outside of Peppertree Apartments said the scene of crime tape and police cars is all too familiar.

Police said Akeem Williams was killed on Eastwind Drive around 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

“It’s sad, and then the people got their kids that’s there watching this,” the neighbor said. “That’s not right. A child shouldn’t see that growing up.”

People, like Mark Davis, with a family who lives there feared they do not have other options.

“This is the only place we got to live,” Davis said. “Cause they ain’t *bleeping* with nobody.”

Davis told WREG it is hard finding affordable housing in safe neighborhoods when you have bad credit, a not so good rental history, or are unemployed.

“On jobs and *bleep* like that. They not *bleeping* with us. So you got to live in somewhere like that,” Davis explained.

Somewhere where even a toddler was shot two weeks ago.

“They asked me if I had anything to do with it,” Sean Ward said.

Ward is not allowed on Peppertree property because of his criminal past.

He said police questioned him about shooting 2-year-old Makayah at the complex last month.

Ward told WREG he had nothing to do with the shooting.

While some families are left feeling they have no choice but to put up with the crime, others said they want the city to take action.

“The apartments need to be set on fire. Like everybody needs to vacate. They just need to burn them down,” the neighbor said.
