MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Business owners said there’s a huge trash problem on their street and it’s hurting their bottom line.
It’s the first thing WREG noticed when we drove down the street.
Trash bags, napkins, sheets of paper littered the area, and businesses said they’re tired of it.
“It’s unbelievable, said Woody Welch.
Welch is one of several business leaders who works in this industrial area on Farrisview Boulevard.
More than 15 business leaders met at Welch’s business Wednesday telling Waste Management enough is enough.
“I cannot believe the city of Memphis would allow a facility to trash up the streets like this and do nothing about it,” Welch said.
Welch said some of the trash is coming from the Waste Management Facility down the street.
“For the last several years, the waste management facility on Farrisview Blvd. has done nothing to contain the waste at that facility and the wind blows it half a mile away,” he explained.
Welch said ReCommunity Recycling is causing similar problems.
A spokesperson with Public Works said litter crews come there weekly, but the number will increase to three times a week. Businesses said this problem dates back to at least four years.
“Everyday we come in, trash is lined up across the fence line all the way down, I’m guessing it’s because there’s no fence built up so when the winds carry, it just blows everything over here and it looks terrible,” said Chris Miller with Central Transport.
Public Works said the litter problem is related to contamination in the stream, particularly plastic bags creating additional cost.
People in the area said their customers complain about the trash, too.
“There needs to be some type of containment where all this trash stays within their facility and doesn’t blow all over the streets and interstates and it’s just deplorable,” Welch said.
Recommunity Recycling said it is going to come back with a proposal in 30 days for a method of containing the garbage on the facility.
