Businesses, Memphis Police Prepare for Busy Downtown Weekend

(Memphis) Businesses in downtown Memphis are prepared for a busy weekend with a Grizzlies Playoff game and Memphis in May Music Fest bringing thousands downtown.

“Coming out of the winter, it’s really hard and you kind of look forward to this time to make up for the bills and pay the winter’s bills,” said Ty Agee with the Beale Street Merchants Association.

Agee said despite the rain, he still expects it to be a busy weekend. “I’ve seen 22 of them down here and that’s pretty much the way it goes and that’s okay. Everybody is already here and the hotels are full,” said Agee.

Mark Hamilton of Mark’s Grille Food Truck said the city is allowing food trucks to park on Beale Street this weekend.

“When the game ends people come out all happy and they stay on Beale Street and they stay out and party late at night,” said Hamilton.

Memphis Police are also ready for the influx of people downtown.

“We’ve certainly been here and done this before. Nothing will change and we will be more than prepared. We have sky towers, we have sky cops, plain clothes officers. You’re going to see quite a bit,” said Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong.
