TUPELO, Miss. — A 10-year-old from Byhalia died after a fallen tree limb hit him on the head during a baseball tournament in Tupelo.
According to reports, the accident happened on Saturday around 6 p.m.
“We’re going to miss a great kid as far as I’m concerned,” Terry Rodgers said.
Great. It is how family members choose to remember Lane Rodgers.
“Him and his teammates was running towards the cars to get in the car and all of a sudden just a big limb snapped out of a tree,” Rodgers, Lane’s grandfather, said.
Tupelo Parks and Recreation Director Alex Farned said players were being called off the field at Ballard Park because of the weather when the tree limb snapped and hit the child in the back of the head.
He was taken to North Regional Medical Center where Rodgers said doctors tried to fly Lane to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis.
“They were going to try to airlift him a couple of times but never could get him stable enough to make the trip,” Rodgers said.
Lane died at the hospital in Tupelo.
The boy’s family and teammates are still coping with the loss.
“They need to be in your prayers too because they was all right there when it happened, so they’re going through a hard time too,” Rodgers explained.
Lane is described as a good person who loved baseball, being a part of a team, and had dreams of playing ball at Ole Miss.
“It’s just like — like you’re going to wake up, and then he’ll be right here playing and — but it’s not going to happen, and we know that. We just got to depend on the Lord to get us through this,” Rodgers told WREG.
The tournament has been cancelled.
The family has set up a memorial fund for Lane at Citizen’s Bank in Byhalia, PO Box 667, Byhalia, MS 38611.
The child’s funeral will be for Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at United Methodist Church in Byhalia. The visitation is at 1:00 p.m.
