MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Director of Engineering for the City of Memphis has announced he will be stepping down at the end of the year.

John Cameron informed Mayor A C Wharton and the Mayor-elect, Jim Strickland, of his decision on Thursday.

He will remain on the job, helping Strickland’s transition team through December 31.

Cameron has served the city for 18 years and had a hand in many different projects including bringing new modern parking meters to the downtown area, instituted over 100 miles of on-street bike lanes, and secured addition funding for street paving, according to the release.

“It has been an honor to serve as Director of Engineering and my time spent in that position has been the most interesting and gratifying in my professional career,” Cameron said. “This is an appropriate time for me to step aside to pursue other opportunities and make room for new leadership within the Engineering Division.”
