Caught on Camera: Neighbors witness a mobile chop shop in Nutbush

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A group of thieves were caught on camera stripping a car in the middle of the Nutbush neighborhood Thursday afternoon.

Witnesses said two of the bandits were in a stolen car, and the others followed in a SUV when the group parked on Fairmont.

They reportedly pulled over and stripped the orange, stolen car, peeled panels and rolled tires into the SUV.

“The car sitting there in the middle of the street on blocks,” said Gregory James.

It happened feet from his doorstep.

“My daughter, Myra, and her cousin were riding bicycles out here. My in-laws were sitting on the porch enjoying the day, and they just said it was something like you’d see on TV,” said James. “[My children] were scared. They said they ran in the house. They didn’t know what was going on. They just seen stuff flying and tires rolling across the street.”

James’ wife called 911.

“Just left the car sitting. The car was smoking,” said James.

The thieves got away before a fire truck pulled up to put out the smoke.

James said he waited two hours for police to show up and take a report.

We asked MPD what their records show and if they caught the suspects, but have yet to hear back.

Meanwhile, children and neighbors are unnerved.

“You’ve got more places than a child infested neighborhood to drop a stolen car,” said James.

As soon as we hear from police, we will let you know.
