Charleston shooter charged with nine counts of murder

Dylann Roof

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Dylan Roof has been charged with nine counts of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

CNN reports sources told its reporters Roof confessed.

One of the officials said that Roof, who is white, told investigators that he wanted to start a race war.

Before Roof left the church, he asked one of the elderly members whether he had shot her, and she said no.

“And he said, ‘Good, because we need a survivor because I’m going to kill myself,’ ” CNN was told.

Friends say Roof told them last week he was going to shoot up a college but they didn’t believe him.

Roof got a gun when he turned 21 in April. The gun was either given the gun or used birthday money to buy it, depending on whom you ask.

There was no legal reason Roof should not have access to a gun.

Joey Meek said he recently connected with Roof and told CBS News Roof said many racist things recently.

NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks said “there is no greater coward than a criminal who enters a house of God and slaughters innocent people.”
