Charter bus bursts into flames on I-40

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A charter bus caught on fire on I-40 near the Sycamore View exit Monday evening.

WREG was told the 55 people were on the bus at the time of the incident, but no one was hurt.

Passengers said they chartered the bus from Baltimore to Memphis and Tunica for vacation.

“We were riding down the highway and all of a sudden we heard a big boom! It sounded like a tire went out,” said passenger Tyrese Weems who was sitting in the middle of the bus. “The driver pulled over and another big boom! You can see the bus caught on fire.”

Weems said everyone got off quickly.

“I told everybody to calm down, take your time, don’t run and get off. That’s what we did. Then the men came from the other bus to help get the luggage off,” she said.

WREG learned the bus belongs to Magnum Coach Lines out of Georgia.

Staff said the bus has never had problems, and they do not know what started it.
