Officials: Chattanooga bus driver had no drugs or alcohol in system, but strayed from designated route

Johnthony Walker

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A toxicology report for Johnthony Walker, who was driving the school bus that crashed into a tree and killed five children, showed there were no drugs or alcohol in his system, Chattanooga Police said Wednesday.

However, the road where the crash happened was not on the designated route for the school bus, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The NTSB is investigating why that was the case.

Police also said no witnesses confirmed a victim’s mother’s report that Walker said “Are you ready to die?” before the crash.

No children were ejected from the bus, police said.

Police obtained footage from the bus and are reviewing it now. They said there is a lot of physical and testimonial evidence they are going through.
