(Memphis) Four children were hurt when their daycare van flipped on Lamar Avenue Friday morning.
Police say all of the kids should have been buckled up in a car seat, but only one car seat was found.
They say it could mean the difference between life and death for a child in an accident.
The four children were all under the age of four.
“It’s always devastating to all of us here at Le Bonheur and Safe Kids, every time we hear about a crash or a near miss and kids were not properly secured in child safety seats,” said Susan Helms with Safe Kids Mid-South.
She believes car seats save lives, “You never know when a crash is going to happen. It can happen at anytime and you want to protect the children and yourself at all times.”
Helms says Safe Kids Mid-South works to provide resources to parents on how to properly transport their children by making sure they have the right car seat for the child and know how to properly put it in.
Helms said children not in car seats is a big problem in Memphis.
“We spend 20 maybe even 40 minutes in our instructions to family’s, but that is 20 to 40 minutes well spent,” she said. “It’s a life that could be saved.”
As for a licensed daycare, Helms says they should know laws for transporting a child.
The driver could face charges for not having all the kids in child seats.
“Its alarming anytime I hear that a child is not in a child safety seat,” Helms said. “Certainly a childcare center has a responsibility to make sure there transportation is as safe as possible.”
Police say this accident is still under investigation.
The Daycare, Taylor’s Learning Academy, could also face charges when it’s all said and done. We were unable to reach them for a comment on Friday.
