(Memphis) We have an update on a 10-year-old boy hit by a car outside Lincoln Elementary School.
There have been no arrests in the hit-and-run and the child is still out of school recovering a month after it happened, but the city and school have made some big changes since then.
On the street where the fifth grader was hit, the city has put up at least six signs and painted a crosswalk.
“At first there were no signs – nothing,” said Olivia Williams, the boy’s mother.
Her son is still recovering from a broken leg, knocked-out teeth and fractures in his face.
“He actually had his nose rebuilt. They went back in and rebuilt the bones.”
On August 29, as he walked across South Orleans Street, he was hit by car outside Lincoln Elementary.
“There was whole lot of people and my teacher was hugging me while I was on the ground,” said the boy.
Carl says he remembers his teacher hugging him and feeling no pain. However, his mother is still hurting knowing he was injured and the driver never stopped to see if he was OK.
A month later, a detective is still searching for the person behind the wheel.
“He does call me and say ‘Miss Williams, I haven’t forgot your son. I am still working on the case’. He was thinking it was a parent that went to the school but he doesn’t have definite proof.”
Since the incident, parent volunteers are helping out as crossing guards outside Lincoln Elementary.
Olivia says she wishes they would have always been there but is glad they are there now.
“God works in mysterious ways. Sometimes it takes things to happen.”
Police are looking for someone who drives a silver Nissan Altima and, according to Williams, the detective believes this person is a man.
Police say the detective has interviewed the suspect and students at the school.
