Church launches month-long prayer effort for Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some Memphis church communities believe law enforcement and city leaders are doing what they can to combat crime, but they are up against a lot.

That is why they are coming together everyday over the next month to pray for the city.

Greater Paradise Baptist Church Pastor Gregory Stokes is inviting Memphians to pray at church, or on his/her own, every day in March at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.

“That spirit of murder that’s seemingly over the city of Memphis, we rebuke it right now,” prayed Cedric Canada with Success N Life Ministry.

On the first day of March, there are already at least 38 murders in the city.

That violence affects Stokes’ church community.

“I’m just trusting God, amen, that our numbers will slow down, that He will deliver,” Stokes said.

Stokes said he is partnering with about 25 churches so far.

“If we come together and rise up and seek His face and pray, amen, things are going to change in Memphis. I just, I believe that,” Stokes said.

“When the churches are united together, we believe the Lord will hear us,” said Pastor Leo Patton with Freedom Baptist Church.

At the first Memphis prayer group of the month, Greater Paradise asked for help for city leaders and law enforcement.

“We realize today that no town hall meeting, no community meeting, can do what you do, Lord,” Canada prayed.

Stokes said he hopes more faith communities join in the effort as the Lenten season continues.
