City being forced to repay part of $3.8 million transportation grant

MEMPHIS, Tenn. —  The City of Memphis will be forced to repay part of a $3.8 million grant that was used to build a vehicle-inspection center, that was later closed.

Several years ago, the city was given the grant to build the Appling Road inspection center.

The center was opened in November of 2010, but then closed in 2013 after the City Council voted to stop the funding of the inspection program.

Now, the Federal Highway Administration has notified the Tennessee Department of Transportation that the money used to build the now closed station has to be repaid in part.

It’s unclear at this time how much of the $3.8 million the city will have to repay.
