MEMPHIS, Tenn. — There was a lot of controversy after the contractor for Memphis Light Gas and Water hired to trim trees on power lines.

The company already took the heat for hiring the majority of its workers out of the country.

Now council members said they were concerned about the way the company advertised.

Council members said the Houston based company, ABC Professional Tree Services needed to do a better job advertising.

“I get emails sent to me of you guys advertising jobs in fortune cookies. I get emails sent to me that you guys are advertising jobs in some real questionable ways,” said Council Member Berlin Boyd.

ABC told the council during a committee meeting Tuesday they put up flyers at Memphis Light Gas and Water and had an overwhelming response from applicants online.

“We`ve contacted the first 300, We`ve had applicants since the first of April and we continue to go through those applicants so it`s given us a real robust group of applicants,” said Tim Manner.

ABC said they needed about 40 more workers.

They also said the Workforce Investment Network, or WIN, was also helpful with getting the word out.

There were nearly 40 WIN applicants.

Boyd suggested they also advertise over the radio.
