(Memphis) After meeting for more than six hours today, the city council has approved an operating budget for the city with a 7-6 vote.
The approved budget was based of a budget proposal from Councilman Harold Collins. It includes 50 layoffs (plus 300 through attrition) and the 4.6 percent pay restoration for city employees.
The budget also includes restoring funds for community centers, libraries and code enforcement.
There will be a 2.5 percent ($6 million) cut to police.
After voting on the operating budget, the council had to vote on the property tax. Councilwoman Janis Fullilove apparently didn’t realize what she was voting for, and voted it down. She asked for another vote, and the property tax rate of $3.40 passed.
The council met to work on the budget last week, but decided to postpone making a decision until this week.
