(Memphis) Sixty -two year old Memphis City Councilwoman Janis Fullilove is set to face a judge Wednesday morning after she was arrested Tuesday.
Fulliove and her 55-year-old husband Vernon Chalmers were charged with misdemeanor domestic assault after police were called to the couple’s home on Morningview near the airport at 12:15 am.
The affidavit of complaint said Chalmers told police he came home from a friend’s house and his wife was drinking and accusing him of cheating.
Chalmer said Fullilove began throwing dishes, and a plate hit him in the arm after it shattered.
Chalmers told police he then pushed his wife down and held her to the ground until police arrived.
The report also says both Chalmers and Fullilove were arrested then Fullilove passed out on the sidewalk on her way to the squad car.
Fullilove was released from jail on her own recognizance just before 7 Tuesday morning.
As of noon, Vernon Chalmers was still behind bars with a $1,000 bond.
Neighbors of Fullilove have mixed views about the councilwoman’s arrest.
“Me personally,I think she ought to be left alone. Maybe she ought to step down and leave that alone and deal with her own issue rather than trying to serve the public,” said Ed Bullock.
Fullilove and Chalmers are due in court Wednesday morning.
