MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Public Works Director announced he was giving the company responsible for picking up trash in parts of the city until Thursday to step it up.

He said his office has received complaints about Inland Waste for months.

Homeowners told WREG they’re frustrated because their trash still isn’t getting picked up on time.

Dwan Gilliom, the Public Works Director said the city may not have any other choice but to terminate the company’s services.

Everyone WREG spoke to in one Cordova neighborhood said they wouldn’t give the company responsible for picking up their trash anything close to a passing grade.

“Not real well right now, about three weeks ago I had to call them. My recyclables were out there for three weeks before they picked it up,” she said.

Dianne Renfrow who lived another Cordova neighborhood said she has the same problem.

“We thought about delivering our trash in front of Wharton and see then if it got picked up. That might be one way to get it done,” she said.

Gilliom said Inland Waste admitted the company was behind schedule.

He said he spoke with corporate this week and told them he’s giving them until Thursday, May 14 to get on track.

If they don’t, then they’ll move in another direction.

“We will look at the hotspots in the contracted area Friday and begin to put a plan together to deploy city crews in those areas that are serviced by Inland that we’ve noticed that they’re still behind in collection services, he said.

A letter was also sent to the company saying it needed to step it up.

Gilliom said Inland presented a plan with details about how the company plans to get caught up.
