Civil Rights Icon To Visit Mississippi

(Memphis) Civil rights icon James Meredith is making a historic return to the town where he was shot and injured 47 years ago.

Meredith will make a stop tomorrow at the Hernando Public Library to promote his book, “A Mission from God: A Memoir and Challenge for America.”

Meredith was shot three times while he was marching to the state capital in Jackson to inspire African Americans living in Mississippi to vote.

He is also the first African American man to enroll at the University of Mississippi in 1962.

Meredith’s last visit to Desoto County was in 1996 when he returned to finish his march from Memphis to Jackson.

Meredith will appear at the Hernando Public Library at noon.
