MEMPHIS, Tenn — Thousands of drivers on I-240 were stuck in bumper to bumper traffic during rush hour Wednesday morning.
The Memphis Police Department closed I-240 West at Perkins.
They said they were investigating a crash from over the weekend.
This was the second closure in two days.
Tuesday afternoon police, dogs, and even horses took over the interstate, canvassing I-240 at Perkins and I-40 at Sycamore View.
Officers said the two scenes were part of a deadly crash investigation that killed two men over the weekend.
However they wouldn’t say how the two locations which are miles apart were related.
They also would not say why they were back out on the interstate on Wednesday, only that it was part of their investigation.
Some drivers reported waiting up to an hour in the traffic.
Drivers said they’ve never seen a shut down like this before.
“That’s my first time, that’s my first time,” said one motorist shaking his head.
WREG found Alivia Luck pumping gas at a gas station off Perkins.
She said she learned her lesson and took a different route on Wednesday.
Her last name might be Luck but for Alivia yesterday she was anything but lucky.
She told WREG she is a home health worker and couldn’t get to work because she was stuck in traffic.
“I couldn’t make three of my visits,” said Luck.
She said she thinks her coworkers were affected as well.
“We serve all of Memphis and Tipton County and everywhere so we use that interstate all the time,” she explained.
On Wednesday she made up for the time lost and said she’ll be getting home at a later time than usual.
“I mean I just don’t get paid, I have to make up the visits, make my days longer the rest of the week,” she said.
Another driver, Antasia Roberts said she took a detour yesterday after she saw the mile long line of cars.
“I tried to get off and go another way because there was so much traffic,” said Roberts.
She saw the traffic terror while she was on her way to pick her daughter up from school.
“I think that’s ridiculous,” she said.
Police would not elaborate about what their investigation was about.
They only responded to requests for an interview by saying, “this is an active investigation. No additional information is available for release at this time.”
Police did say they chose the times of the closures based on the resources they had.
TDOT assisted with the closures and said they did the best they could to alert drivers on short notice.
“I mean these are just sometimes spur of the moment events like this that we just have to react and go about the best we can,” said Nicole Lawrence with TDOT.
MPD said for now they do not expect to have more closures but said they will alert the media if they are needed.
The closures stemmed from a weekend crash that killed two men on I-40 Road at Sycamore View Road.
Police said 21-year-old Sergio Gomez was traveling westbound on I-40 when a dog house fell off the back of his truck onto the highway.
Gomez stopped and was trying to pick up the dog house, when he was hit by a motorcyclist traveling westbound on I-40.
Gomez and 31-year-old Jimmy Mackey died on the scene.
The passenger riding on the motorcycle was transported to Regional Medical Center and is listed in critical condition.
