(Memphis) A bombshell from Rep. Steve Cohen today.
A DNA test has revealed the young woman he was told was his daughter is not related to him.
Back in February, Cohen was forced to reveal to the world he had a daughter after the two were caught tweeting during the State of the Union.
Cohen told us he had learned about then 23-year-old Victoria Brink three years earlier, after he looked up an old girlfriend.
He said he was working to make up for lost time, and had taken her to the White House and even brought her to Memphis.
“We spent three days together. I was able to take her to Graceland and the Civil Rights Museum and try to turn her on to some things in my life,” said Cohen.
It now turns out the Democratic congressman and Texas college student are not related.
A DNA test arranged by CNN showed the man who raised Brink is her father.
So far, Cohen has talked directly to the media, but in an interview Brink said the last several months have been overwhelming, crazy and stressful.
Some of Cohen’s constituents said they didn’t care about the latest revelation, but others said they felt bad for their congressman.
“I think it’s kind of devastating because you are trying to build a relationship with someone you didn’t really know existed,” said one man.
Still, they question why Cohen didn’t have a DNA test of his own done years ago.
“You should be a little disappointed, but at the same time you should have done your own research and an investigation on that,” said a woman.
Brink’s mother is not talking about the DNA results, but says she has a good relationship with her daughter.
Statement from Steve Cohen:
“I was overjoyed when I was informed that Victoria was my daughter,” said Congressman Cohen. “Since then, I have given her my unconditional love and done my best at being a father as I tried to make up for lost time.”
“I was stunned and dismayed when DNA tests disproved what Victoria and I believed about our relationship. I still love Victoria, hold dear the time I have shared with her, and hope to continue to be a part of her life.”
“It’s been a roller coaster ride these last three and a half years from which I have learned something about parenting and some more about love, life, and heartache.”
