MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fifteen Code Enforcement Officers swarmed the Ascension Tower Apartments on Stuart Road Wednesday to take a look at the building.

They came to deal with water issues, but they found several more problems once they stepped inside.

Upon inspection, they found bed bugs, gnats, faulty elevators and on-and-off hot water.

“Yeah there wasn’t any hot water for a while, but that’s been fixed,” said Velma Moore.

Moore said inspectors came to check her apartment Wednesday, but luckily didn’t find any problems.

But Gazela Hamer had a few concerns including the elevators.

“I’m a disabled nurse, and it bothers me when the elevators are constantly out,” Hamer explained.

“Talking with tenants who complained about other insects, specifically bed bugs, gave us the initiative to inspect every unit in this building,” said Otis Tidwell with the City’s Code Enforcement Team.

And the tenants said they are glad to hear it.

Building Managers didn’t return our messages, but inspectors said this was their second visit in less than one month.

“We would not identify this as a problem property, but we want to make sure it doesn’t become a problem property,” Tidwell added.

He said the problems are manageable, and they would check in weekly until everything is fixed.

He doesn’t expect anyone will need to move.

“So it’s safe enough and good enough for your mother or your father?” WREG asked.

“Yes,” Tidwell responded.
