Coldwater River Bridge replacement may take two years

HERNANDO, Miss. — Stop and turn around.

Drivers in DeSoto County and Tate County will need to find another way to get back and forth for the next two years.

“They have to turn around and hit the interstate and go wherever they need to go,” Vicki Franks said.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation announced it is replacing the Coldwater River Bridge after recent flood waters appeared to separate the road.

“I just thought it was going to be like before when they just shut down it for a couple of days. I didn’t know it was this bad,” Allie Brown said.

Drivers will now be forced to use I-55 to get between Coldwater and Hernando.

The bridge was set to be replaced later this year, but recent damage prompted the state to fast-track the project.

“I would just hope that it is safer and easier to get across cause I know there’s been wrecks on there too, and when it floods it gets really bad too. So maybe they can do something about that,” Brown said.

MDOT plans to raise the bridge higher to eliminate flooding concerns.
