College students are concerned about campus security after recent shootings

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — This week’s shooting incidents have college students talking more about campus security.

The most recent shooting was in Savannah where a student was shot to death in the school’s student union building Thursday.

Students and campus leaders told WREG this week has been extremely overwhelming.

They said they’re talking more about safety and communication on college campuses.

Some said they wondered if there would be more shootings after a reporter and photographer were shot and killed on live TV this week.

Former University of Memphis student Paris Leake said people are on edge after that incident and the murder at Savannah State.

“I`m praying for the other schools because it`s the first week of school and stuff. People want to go to school and feel safe where they hope and pray that nothing happens to them,” she said.

Leake, who planned to go back to school soon to pursue another degree, said she was thinking more about security on campuses.

A spokesperson with the University of Memphis said an email went out to students recently giving them safety tips.

It provided a 24 hour University Police hotline number and a link to the emergency text messaging system that sends students alerts when there`s a safety concern.

“There`s the blue light system, and you can always find a campus police officer so on this campus, I do feel safe,” said U of M freshman Blake Noel.

Some students said they understood why others may not feel so safe after hearing about what happened at Mississippi State on Thursday.

The University issued an active shooter alert, even though there was no shooting and police said the suspect didn’t have a gun.

“That`s like cry wolf, you can`t do stuff like that,” Leake replied.

A spokesperson with Lemoyne Owen said they have been monitoring the events that happened at MSU and Savannah State.

They said this helps them address safety concerns.
