MILLINGTON, Tenn. — After money disappeared from the evidence room at the Millington Police Department, Shelby County Commissioner Terry Roland is placing blame.
Roland said he is upset with the entire department but specifically with how the chief is handling the situation now that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is involved.
“I’m disappointed in the police department,” he said. “I’m disappointed in the chief.”
Roland said a TBI investigation into the missing money at the department is making everyone question whether the police are trustworthy.
“The people are not real happy with the police department in Millington as a whole right now,” he said.
“Some people don’t want to do their job right,” Millington resident Hustine Horton said. “If they don’t get what they want, they do something else.”
The TBI is staying tight lipped on how much money was taken and what case it was connected to.
Some, like Horton, think that is unfair to the public.
“People that live in Millington, they need to know whether they can trust people,” Horton said.
Roland said it was critical to have the TBI take over.
“If you’ve got a police department that was over something and that something comes up missing, you definitely don’t want them to be doing the investigation.”
Roland said he is not confident in the department as a whole, and regardless of who is to blame, he said one thing is clear: “A lot of people have dropped the ball when it comes to the police department in Millington. … As a county official, I think that we can do better.”
The TBI investigation is still underway.
