MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A contractor was shot in a drive-by while working on a home on Hudson Street Tuesday evening.
The landlord fears it was an act of revenge by tenants he turned in to authorities for trying to pay rent with counterfeit money.
The victim, Dave Harvey, is out of the hospital. Police said the bullet hit Harvey at an angle, and he’s lucky to be alive.
Harvey was recently on WREG helping us build a closet for our Tim’s Coats for Kids campaign.
One week later, Harvey was helping out with another project. He was removing an AC unit and installing security bars in a rental home Tuesday.
The landlord was there too. He said they were both standing in the front of the house finishing up their work for the day when they heard loud pops.
“The glass started shattering and Dave said he was hit,” the landlord said.
The landlord didn’t get a good look at who did it, but he thinks the shoots could be retaliating.
Last week, he called the Secret Service, because one of his tenants used fake $100 bills to pay rent.
A Secret Service spokesperson told WREG they raided the home, and although they didn’t find any counterfeit money, they did find drugs and weapons. WREG is told MPD confiscated it all and made an arrest.
“I hate that someone helping me gets hurt like that. I think he’s okay. I am hoping that’s the case,” the landlord said.
MPD is still trying to find out if it is retaliation or if the shooters had some other vendetta.
Either way, the landlord said a kind and giving man was shot on Hudson for “no reason at all.”
Police have not released a description of the suspect, but said they got away in a SUV.
The landlord said he is boarding up the home at the end of the week.
