MINETTO, N.Y. — A central New York teacher has been accused of dragging a disruptive second-grader to the principal’s office and throwing the boy over a counter.

State police say Sean Fitzgerald has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and harassment stemming from Tuesday’s incident at Minetto Elementary School in Oswego County, about 30 miles northwest of Syracuse.

CBS Syracuse affiliate WTVH reports that the incident happened within full view of the secretarial staff and the principal.

Oswego City Schools Superintendent Dean Goewey issued the following statement to CNY Central:

“There was a physical altercation on Tuesday, May 3rd at the Minetto Elementary school in the Oswego City School District involving a teacher and a student. The school administration immediately contacted the New York State Troopers who is investigating the matter. I understand that charges have been brought against the teacher. I am deeply concerned over the incident. The District were in contact with the parents of the student yesterday and have communicated with the Minetto School community. The teacher has been placed on leave pending further investigation and action by the District.

Parents expect their children to be safe at school. While I cannot control the conduct of every teacher in every situation, and will not rush to judgment, I will ensure that District policies on discipline and dealing with student conduct are followed. District personnel are accountable for their actions.”

Police say the student wasn’t injured.

Fitzgerald is scheduled to appear in court later this month.

It wasn’t immediately known if he has a lawyer.
