MEMPHIS, Tenn. — “Cold-blooded” was the only way people like Mike Keegin could describe the way Susan McDonald was killed two weeks ago.
“I guess I just didn’t think that something like that would happen over here,” Marcus Brand said.
“It was just — it was horrible,” Sunny Smith said.
Saturday, neighbors near Bazemore Road got a sign of relief after police said they arrested the man responsible for the crime.
“I’m glad they caught him. I’m glad they caught him,” Brand said.
Jail doors slammed on Anthony Olivo with no set bond.
He is charged with first-degree murder.
“Utter relief for us to feel safer again, but for her family who finally has an answer,” Smith said.
Someone outside of Olivo’s Southeast Memphis home said their loved one is innocent and a good person.
WREG dug into the accused murderer’s past and found Olivo had been in and out of trouble with the law for years and faced theft, drug and gun charges.
In the murder of Susan McDonald, police said Olivo told them he was working with someone else to plan the robbery attempt when things went wrong and McDonald was killed.
“When you get one, and you put pressure on him — I’m pretty sure they’re going to come up with the other guy,” Keegin said.
Neighbors said they do not feel safe anymore after seeing crime tape, neighbors gathered in disbelief and droves of police cars on their block.
“We’ve just been stricken with fear,” Smith said.
Many hope that fear will disappear when police get the second bad guy off of the streets.
“Turn them in for the money, turn them in for your heart, turn them in morally — turn them in,” Smith begged.
Police have not released a description or said much about the second person listed in the report.
McDonald’s family upped the reward in this case to $25,000, with CrimeStoppers adding another $1,000, prior to Olivo’s arrest. It is unclear if the money will now be used to catch the other suspect.
