Cordova Target store to close its doors in February

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis Target store will close its doors for good Feb. 2.

On Monday, the company announced it will be shutting down six stores nationwide, including the one at 475 N. Germantown Parkway near Trinity in Cordova.

Danielle Schumann with Target said it was a tough decision that came after several years of declining profitability at the Cordova store.

She said Target will assist the more than 150 full-time and part-time employees at that location to transition to jobs at other Target stores in the Memphis area. Historically, she said, most employees choose to transfer.

Target has eight locations in Shelby County and DeSoto County, including another location on Germantown Parkway near the Wolfchase area.

The Cordova store’s closing comes as sad news for regular customers like Jonathan Nyaku.

“It’s very clean, well laid out. So, we’re going to miss it,” he said.

But looking at a relatively busy parking lot, Nyaku said the news that profits were declining at the store is also unexpected.

“You wouldn’t think, because look at the parking lot,” he said. “For a Tuesday morning, 11 a.m., it’s not too bad. If I had this in my business all the time I’d be a billionaire by now.”

He says the store is usually busy.

“We see quite a number of people coming through, and we come here as well, so somehow our dollars are not enough.”

Two stores in Chicago, one in Milwaukee and another in New York also will be closing.
