Could another beer garden spark revitalization downtown?

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — You may have noticed the downtown eyesore.

An abandoned firehouse next to the FedEx Forum has sat empty for years.

Over a century ago, it was a fire station, but since then it’s been everything from a night club to a recording station.

Come October, the building will see new life.

A temporary beer garden and entertainment venue with food trucks is opening up inside.

It will be called “Station 3: The Memphis Firehaus.”

“It’s another place I can go with my friends downtown,” said Memphis resident Ken Gibbs.

The same folks who were behind the beer garden at the old Tennessee Brewery last Spring were the brains behind this operation.

Some people credited the beer garden for saving the brewery and convincing an investor to pay $27.5 million to redevelop it into an apartment building; ultimately bringing construction jobs and revenue into the Bluff City.

Those people said they are hoping for the same effect at the fire house.

“It’s definitely going to bring a lot more people down here,” said Memphis resident Darren Beale.

The hot spot plans on being open Thursday through Sundays.

On opening night, October 1, beer proceeds will go to a Memphis firefighter who is battling leukemia and has to travel to St. Louis every week for treatment.
