SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — Former Southaven Mayor Greg Davis could be slapped with federal charges for defrauding the city he ran for so many years.
Sources close to the case told WREG it’s not a matter of if, but when.
Wednesday, Davis was found guilty of embezzling money from the city by improperly leasing a car and double dipping on city gas.
At the same time DeSoto County launched an investigation against Davis in 2011, so did the FBI.
It’s been said the feds were waiting to see what happens on the local level before they move in.
Former U.S. Attorney David Kustoff said the FBI will likely look at Davis’ testimony to see if it helps build their case on whether he broke federal law during his four terms as mayor.
“They are going to be sure and very comfortable that if Greg Davis is indicted, the case is locked down, and they can in fact convict him,” said Kustoff.
Kustoff said the FBI will take their time, and we won’t know they’ve moved forward until there’s an indictment.
“There is always a possibility Greg Davis could receive a letter to appear before the grand jury, and if Greg Davis wants to tell everybody about that, he can certainly do it. He could be informed he’s a target,” said Kustoff.
WREG put in a call to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Oxford but never heard back.
