MEMPHIS, Tenn. — City Council members Janis Fullilove and Martavius Jones have now paid their taxes after they failed to pay them on time.

Last week WREG discovered Fullilove hadn’t paid her county taxes for the past three years. WREG obtained documents from the Shelby County Trustee’s office that confirmed she owed $2,067.73.

She was at risk of losing her home if she didn’t pay.

Fullilove told WREG she didn’t know there were issues and was caught off guard about the problem when she was out of town.

“I don’t see how they can really be relevant,” said Fullilove when she spoke with WREG on the issue Tuesday.

“Because you’re a public official.”

“I know but if you go around and look at some other public officials. I don’t care who you are or how much money you have. Everybody owes a tax to somebody or everybody owes something to somebody.”

Councilman Martavius Jones owed $700 in county taxes. He promised to pay everything off by this week and told WREG it’s an oversight, but we found he’s paid his city taxes late nine of the last 10 years.

Councilmen Reid Hegdepeth and Joe Brown were also late paying but got caught up last Wednesday.
