(Memphis) City Council Members were downright disgusted that Memphis police allowed rape evidence like blood, semen, and saliva to sit on shelves — in some cases since the 80s.
“This is the first time I have heard this at all,” said council member Janis Fullilove.
The sentiment was echoed by a many of the council members — but they did know.
News Channel 3 first uncovered the untested rape kits more than three years ago.
We emailed the entire city council back then asking for action, and we reminded them of that fact Tuesday night.
“I’m surprised you haven’t called for anyone in the police department to be fired,” said Wanda Halbert, council member.
Former Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin took issue with our investigation back then.
Now, current MPD director Toney Armstrong says the untested kits are there just like we reported years ago.
Even if they come up with the cash, it only pays for a test to see if there is DNA evidence.
It could cost more to match the evidence, but it might not even matter, since the cases may have sat for too long to go to trial.
District Attorney General Amy Weirich said depending on the case, the charge, and the law at that time some of the kids could be used, and some may not.
