(Memphis) The crippling effect on transportation from Sandy has a Memphis couple stuck in New York going to a plan “B”  so they can see their kids in time for Halloween.

When their flight got cancelled again, they formed an escape plan that included booking a rental car.

That’s because they found an airport with flights leaving, and they wanted to get there.

The plan? Head about 200 miles South to catch a plane back to Memphis.

“Closest we could get was a flight leaving out of Baltimore,” said Rob Clark.

Rob and Karen Clark spent almost two days stuck in New York because of Superstorm Sandy and they figured two days would turn into many more.

“We were afraid they were going to keep cancelling, rescheduling, cancelling, rescheduling,” said Clark.

New york La Guardia Airport is still underwater and closed and the Clarks wanted to get home to their children.

“I wish they were here for Halloween,” said 8th Grader Gray Clark.  “It’s always a big deal for us.”

And that may happen for their 13-year-old son, Gray.

The Memphis couple went to New York to see The Jimmy Fallon Show but the storm canceled Monday’s show.

But they did get to see Tuesday’s taping, “All he could get was local guests so he had Donald Trump on as a guest, which was fun.”

Then Wednesday morning, The Clarks got up before dawn to be the first at AVIS Car Rental that just got power back on.

“The woman at the counter said she had 75 reservations and had only one car,” said Clark.

“So, how come you got it?” asked Reporter Sabrina Hall.

“Because we were there first,” laughed Clark.

And that is what got them home for Halloween.

The Couple arrived back in Memphis around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
