Shelby County leaders plan to help businesses with reopening process

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County leaders said any talks about reopening must include those impacted the most.

Mayor Lee Harris is partnering with the Greater Memphis Chamber for a free virtual conference that will focus on conducting business in the shadow of COVID-19.

“As the country enters the conversation about reopening our economy, we want to make sure our local employers are prepared to conduct business in the shadow of a global pandemic,” Harris said.

That’s why Harris is teaming up with the chamber to host a virtual conference for local businesses about how to operate, find funding and develop good practices to help slow the spread of coronavirus.

“We want to equip our local business community with the best practices and resources to allow for sustainable and safe operations that ensure we can continue to work to flatten the curve,” Harris said.

They want to reach those most impacted during this pandemic.

“Social distancing doesn’t mean that we can’t remain a source of information and support for thousands of businesses that we serve,” said Bobby White with the Greater Memphis Chamber.

Those interested can go to covid19.shelbycountytn.gov, where you can register for sessions by business type. It includes small businesses and those in the hospitality industry.

They’re trying to offer a new way of doing things in these uncertain times.

“This is our new normal, and we want you all to prepare as we prepare to reopen responsibly,” Harris said.

The virtual conference is next Tuesday starting at 9 a.m.
