MEMPHIS, Tenn. — First responders made the scene of a vehicle accident on Covington Pike early Monday morning.
Emergency crews shut down the intersection of Covington Pike and Stage Road around 3:30 a.m. after a vehicle struck a utility police, sending wires across the roadway.
Police said they were told the driver became trapped inside the vehicle as it caught on fire. Officer and the witness cut the man’s seat belt and pulled him from the fiery crash just before the cab became engulfed.
“My heart was beating fast, and when they pulled him out it gave me chills just to see his body. He looked lifeless,” resident Brianna Thompson said.
The man sustained burns to his head and neck, but is expected to be okay.
A responding fire truck was also sustained damage to the windshield, but fire officials said they cannot explain that at this time.
