SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — Cheers and an auditorium of thunderous applause greeted President Donald Trump in Southaven, Mississippi.
The president hosted a Make America Great Again Rally at the Landers Center to show support for U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith. She was appointed to fill the seat left vacant by Thad Cochran’s retirement and is a candidate in the Nov. 6 special election to serve for the remainder of his term.
Speaking to a room filled with red Make America Great Again ball caps the president touched on at least a dozen issues – including immigration, tariffs and trade, relationships with other countries, the economy and job growth.
Two of his main focuses were garnering support for appointed Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith and the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, whose confirmation has been met with allegations of sexual misconduct.
“Cindy has voted with me 100 percent of the time. She’s always had my back. She’s always had your back,” the president said.
With little acknowledgment to the several women accusing Kavanaugh, Trump at one point seemed to mock the memory of one of his accusers Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. President Trump defended Kavanaugh and said, “Guilty until proven innocent is a problem.”
“He’s a great father and great husband. This is a great person. And people have said, ‘Well, maybe it’s true. And because of the fact that maybe it’s true he should not become a United States Supreme Court Justice. How terrible is that?” President Trump said to the crowd.
We talked to people before and after the rally abut what resonates with them.
“I have a daughter that’s going to college and is registered to vote now. I have a child that’s wanting to join the military that’s 13-years-old, and we’re here to help our family support our president,” supporter Jenna Pidget said.
