Person from I-40 crash still missing

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An accident on I-40 near Covington Pike had fire crews scrambling to find victims and traffic backed up for miles Tuesday night.

One person in a car involved in that crash is still missing.

The Memphis Fire Department told WREG a car ran off the road and landed in a marshy area next to the interstate.

All three people in the car were ejected during the crash.

A woman was found and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A man was also located but refused to go to the hospital.

Fire crews tell us a third person was in the car and they think that person wandered off.

Crews searched by air, airboat, and foot looking for the third victim and said it’s possible he left the area on his own.

They’re asking him to contact authorities if in fact he is OK.

Fire crews blocked the westbound lanes while they lowered search equipment to the marshy area.

Traffic was backed up for several miles before police allowed drivers to pass on the shoulder.
