MEMPHIS, Tenn. –If you drive down Union Avenue you’ve probably seen a lot of changes at the site of the Kroger.

There’s demolition on one side and construction on the other.

“We’re in a hurry for it to open back up. It’s really limited our options for groceries in the neighborhood,” said Bill Crewe, a Midtown resident.

Crewe lives right behind the site where the new Midtown Kroger will sit.

He said he’s counting the days till construction and renovations wrap up.

“My bills have gone way up since I have to shop at Fresh Market.”

Construction workers told WREG they’re right on schedule.

“We’ve had good weather the couple of months, and we’re making good progress,” said Mitch Ballard with Linkous Construction.

But plans for the renovation were announced back in 2012, and shoppers were initially told it would be done in the first quarter of 2015.

In August of 2015, the opening was moved back to this Fall.

Ballard said they’re working a fast as possible.

“We’re working on the upper level structure right now, doing structural steel, doing masonry on the upper level, and trying to get prepared to start our roof here in about four weeks.”

The new store will include a Starbucks, Corky’s BBQ and specialty cheese bar.

Although Midtown residents told us they’re looking forward to the convenience of  having a Kroger so close again, some aren’t holding their breaths that it will be done on schedule.

“They keep seeming to delay what they’re promising,” said Lee Hutchison.
