(Memphis) He thought he was robbed by a woman, but that wasn’t the case.
Police say a cross-dressing carjacker is in jail and the victim is getting his car back after being without it since News Year’s day.
We talked to the victim on the phone, but he didn’t speak a word of English.
However, a Spanish-speaking translator tells us that he seemed embarrassed about what happened.
It’s not something most men would want to admit: that they picked-up a woman that turned out to be a man. Worse yet, they got carjacked.
“I don’t want that to me,” said Memphis Resident Edgar Valentine. “I’m sitting in my car and someone comes dressing as a woman. I mean whoa!”
Police say it happened at the Shadowbrook Townhomes in Southeast Memphis.
The man says he picked up a woman who then offered him sex.
But when he told her that he had no money, she punched him in the face and ordered him out of his car.
That’s when the woman got into the driver’s seat and took off.
Fast forward to the next day, January 2.
The stolen car was in an accident on I-240 near Norris Road and the driver tries to get away.
Other people involved in that hit-and-run accident say they saw the driver, who appeared to be a woman, running away from the scene pulling off a wig.
Police towed the stolen car to a crime lab, dusted it for fingerprints and they say they matched those of 25-year-old Patrick Riley, not a woman but a man.
Police say his face was still familiar enough for the victim to ID it in a photo line-up.
Riley is in jail for carjacking and leaving the scene of an accident.
He is being held on a $40,000 bond.
