Cummins is adding more jobs to Memphis workforce

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A global, multi-million dollar company said they are adding more jobs to the Memphis workforce.

Cummins Incorporated, which designs, services, and manufactures diesel and natural gas engines, said Tuesday they would invest $6.7 million to expand their current parts and distribution center.

That means more jobs for Shelby County and Hickory Hill where the warehouse is located.

The company planned on adding 400,000 square feet, and hoped to be in their new building on Challenge Drive by November.

They said that would require them to add 70 more jobs, something everyone seemed to be happy about.

WREG was told the jobs would range from office jobs to warehouse jobs and salaries would run from $30,000 to $40,000.

“The energy level got really high when we came to the conclusion that we need to stay in Memphis,” said Gary Cassell, the Director of Global Operations for Cummins Inc.

Forklifts were busy Tuesday afternoon at the warehouse at Cummins Global Operations.

Memphis’ location made it the place to be the company said.

“Memphis is considered the hub for FedEx and of course logistically what better place to be,” said Clarence Carr, the  Director of Logistics at Cummins Inc.

Cummins has been involved in the Memphis community for 30 years, with the current warehouse employing more than  800 employees.

Phil Trenary, President of the Memphis Chamber of Commerce said after the recent news of large companies laying off employees or leaving the area, such as Conduit, this news was a win for the area.

“Not only does this mean we’re going to keep very good jobs, but there’s $58 million in tax revenue that’s going to stay here and benefit our citizens,” he explained.

Citizens like B. Wilson, who lived in Hickory Hill.

“A company that’s coming in that’s going to pay a decent living wage, that’s great,” said Wilson.

She said while 70 jobs isn’t a ton, it’s a step in the right direction.

“Expansion is the key to jobs and fighting poverty since that’s a big deal for the mayor. I think it’s great,” she explained.
