MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Congressman Steve Cohen and U.S. Attorney Edward Stanton III presentd a DEA Special Agent with the Congressional Badge of Bravery Monday.
They said Special Agent Harold Hurley performed a good deed in the community, well beyond his role with the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Hurley received the award because of an incident on December 3, 2014.
Hurley said he was driving to work on I-40 near the Danny Thomas exit when he saw a car on fire.
He tried to pull the car over, but the woman continued to drive.
Hurley said he stuck with her, and she eventually pulled over.
He told her her car was on fire, and he helped her pull out her four children.
He helped them into his car.
Within minutes, the car was engulfed in flames.
“You have law enforcement officers that put their lives on the line everyday, and to get this honor, it does mean something. It hasn’t really hit me yet,” Hurley said.
“That was not necessarily a DEA agent job, but it was a job as a good citizen,” Representative Cohen said.
He said he believed it was the first time he was presenting this badge.
