Delivery driver robbed in broad daylight at busy gas station

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police are looking for a group of robbers who ambushed a delivery driver in broad daylight.

It happened Wednesday at the Mapco gas station at Mt. Moriah and Park.

A delivery driver pulled up to the gas station just before 1 p.m.

He told police he was in the trailer of his semi-truck when five men ran up and claimed at least one of them was armed with a knife.

He said one man told him to turn around and close his eyes while the other four men unloaded 191 cartons of cigarettes worth more than $12,000.

The robbers hopped in a dark green Honda van with the drive out tags and sped down Mt. Moriah, according to the police report.

“That’s very surprising. Very surprising. Just with the amount of people who come through here, that’s insane,” said customer Chip Jones.

Employees said there are no security cameras on the side of the building where it happened.

The suspects’ descriptions are vague too.

“You got to watch your back. All the time! You got to watch when you get out of the car when you stop, who’s following you,” said customer Robert Gatewood.

The victim is from out-of-town. He told WREG on the phone he wasn’t hurt but was pretty shaken up.

“To the guys who did that, that’s uncalled for. I mean get an actual job,” said Jones.

WREG reached out to Mapco corporate offices for a comment, but have yet to hear back.
