(Memphis)  City leaders got the ball rolling, or for lack of better words, the wrecking ball swinging on demolishing the Lonestar silos downtown Thursday.

The deconstruction is part of a massive north riverfront overhaul that includes turning the Pyramid Arena into a mega Bass Pro Shop.

“You’re going to see so much as we progress with Bass Pro. You’ll have a better understanding of why we wanted to remove the towers once you see the venue as you come in along the promenade,” Memphis Mayor AC Wharton said.

The neon signs on the silos, which proclaimed the city’s music heritage, will be stored away until a new home can be found for them.
