DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. — WREG has just learned Desoto County has begun issuing same sex marriage licenses.

The news comes after the county came under heavy fire for not issuing the licenses Monday.

When the ruling from the U.S Supreme Court first came down Friday, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood told the counties to not issue marriage licenses until a stay was lifted.

On Monday, the county reportedly still refused to hand out the licenses despite another email from Hood saying the Supreme Court’s ruling was the law of the land.

He also said if clerks did not comply with the ruling, they risked getting sued.

However, DeSoto County was not the only county in Mississippi choosing not to issue same sex marriage licenses.
