SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — Two deputies are recovering this morning after being shot in Desoto County Wednesday night.

The shootings happened after a confrontation with a suspect believed to be involved in a string of robberies.

One of the deputies, Sgt. Hunter Garrett, was shot in the foot and was released early Thursday morning.

The other deputy, K-9 officer Lee Hutchins, was shot in the chest and has a collapsed lung and is in ICU.

The suspect is dead.

Sheriff Bill Rasco said the suspect, Kevin Washington, was involved in three violent robberies back to back in Horn Lake and Southaven.

Also, the car used in shooting matches a car taken in a Midtown kidnapping from Ardent Studios.

Around 8 p.m., Washington robbed a delivery driver in the Colonial Hill subdivision in Southaven.

He then drove to the McDonald’s in Horn Lake where he robbed a person in the parking lot before heading to the Home Depot. He robbed a second person in that parking lot.

He then went to the Kroger near I-55 and Stateline.

He was sitting in the parking lot when the deputies spotted him around 9 p.m.

The suspect reportedly jumped out of the car and took off running behind Heartland Church.

That’s where he was involved in a shootout with police.
