DHS launches No Tennessee Child Goes Hungry initiative

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Human Services is asking the community for help in fighting child hunger.

The department is gathering feedback from Tennessee residents about its food programs as part of a new initiative called No Tennessee Child Goes Hungry.

Residents can email comments about the 2015 Reauthorization of Child Food Nutrition Programs, also known as the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, to NoHungryTennesseeChild.DHS@tn.gov.

“We are committed to maintaining momentum and continue to see a positive trend in the number of children served in recent years,” DHS commissioner Raquel Hatter said.

DHS is also honoring Summer Food Service Program sponsors for their hard work making sure children have access to healthy meals during the summer, as well as free and reduced-price meals during the schools year. The sponsors can apply for a variety of awards.

“Children are particularly vulnerable to hunger and poor nutrition when school is out,” USDA Food and Nutrition Service representative Robin Bailey Jr. said. “The Summer Meals Programs gives communities an opportunity to play a lead role in combating hunger and helping to promote good nutrition and physical activity,.”
