District Attorney General: Make safe transportation plans if drinking this Halloween

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Halloween scares should stick to ghosts and goblins and stay away from real-life deadly situations like drinking and driving.

District Attorney General Amy Weirich urged those headed to parties Saturday night to not get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.

“Taxis, ride-sharing or having a designated sober driver are excellent options to driving while impaired,” Weirich said, “especially on Halloween night when the streets are crowded with young trick-or-treaters.”

Those who stay sober should still be extra careful while driving and watch out for an increased number of people on the road. Sober drivers can also take friends’ keys to be sure everyone stays safe.

The holiday has been a popular night for drunk drivers; between 2009 and 2013, 43 percent of fatal motor-vehicle crashes on Halloween night involved a drunk driver, according to the National Highway Safety Administration.

In Shelby County alone, more than two dozen people have been killed in an alcohol-related crashes in the past two years.

“Please use good judgement and make sure that Halloween does not turn into a real-life nightmare for you or for someone else,” Weirich said
