GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — More details have been released after the Germantown Municipal School District issued a warning to parents after a student was approached by a stranger as she walked home from school.

District leaders said the incident happened around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday on Level Creek Dr. between Yesteroaks and Windy Oaks.

According to a Facebook post by the child’s mother, the seventh grader at Houston Middle School was walking home after being dropped off by a school bus — when a man in a white van approached her and asked her if she would like a ride home.

Police said the girl told them the truck had the word ‘plumbing’ on it with a “thumbs-up” logo on the side.

She told police the man appeared to be 30-40 years old and spoke with what she described as a “Hispanic” accent.

The girl’s mother said her daughter refused to go with the man and continued to walk home.

Luckily, a neighbor was outside walking his dog and witnessed what was happening.

He made sure the girl was okay.

Parents like Lane Garner were glad the school district notified them right away.

“They gave us an email just telling us what happened and where it happened and when it happened.”

She said it’s also a good reminder for parents to talk about stranger danger.
