MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A serial car burglar in jail after Memphis police say he tried to kill one of their officers during a traffic stop.

Police say 29-year-old Jerry Moore was hiding with a handgun in the attic of this home in Frayser on Friday morning when they finally picked him up after four days on the run.

It all stems from a traffic stop Sunday morning on I-40 near Appling.

When police realized Moore had a warrant out for an auto burglary, he allegedly threw his car into gear with an officer still hanging on, then deliberately hit a concrete barrier.

Police believe he did it to try and hurt the officer and have charged him with attempted second-degree murder — a charge Moore’s aunt doesn’t think fits the crime.

“He shouldn’t be charged with that. He probably was scared. You know how police is now, you know, with us being young black folks,” she said.

But his aunt isn’t disputing Moore’s lengthy criminal history, mainly for breaking into cars.

The first one we could find was in 2008 when he was only 19 — and he also has a troubling history of running from police.

“Peer pressure, that’s all. It’s a lot of peer pressure out here,” his aunt said.

In 2015, police tried pulling Moore over for speeding, but he wouldn’t stop at first, and when he did, they found he had a revoked license, a gun he wasn’t allowed to have and his passenger was wanted for domestic assault.

In 2016, when police wanted him on a reckless endangerment charge, they found him hiding at his aunt’s house under a bed.

“That young man, he was raised well, he just got out on these streets and got mixed up in a lot of stuff,” she said.

Police said two convicted felons live at the house where they found him, but they tell us they didn’t know Moore was on the run.
