(Memphis) It was an emotional day in court.

Nineteen year-old Samer Sakaan was sentenced to 30 days in jail.

He pleaded guilty to hitting and killing William Marshall, a father of two, who walked down his driveway to check his mail.

It was also revealed Sakaan hit another car before striking Marshal which influenced the sentence.

Nightmares are what an emotional Samer Sakaan said he has been experiencing ever since the day he hit and killed William Marshall with his car in 2011.

“I can’t forget it,” Sakaan said from stand during his sentencing hearing. “That’s something I am going to have to live with for the rest of my life.”

Friday, a judged sentenced the 19-year-old to 30 days in jail plus probation on a Reckless Vehicular Homicide plea.

Sakaan confessed to killing Marshall after losing control of his car while illegally passing a slow driver.

A state toxicology report said Sakaan had marijuana in his system from partying the night before.

“We were hoping for a full diversion and probation. The boy was in a car wreck,” said Sakaan’s attorney, Randy Songstead. “There were some aggravating circumstances because he got picked up on a trespass issue three months afterwards.”

The judge says the sentence he handed out took into consideration that Sakaan had already served nine months on house arrest.

Sakaan’s father was not happy that his son got any jail time at all.

“My son did not do anything wrong,” he said as he got on the elevator after the sentencing.

But Marshall’s mother hoped for a stiffer penalty.

She told me on the way out of the courtroom that she was saddened that her son’s life was only worth 30 days.

After serving that jail time, Sakaan will be on probation for three years.

The judge said during that time, Sakaan will have to work full-time or go to school or be required to serve 20 hours of community service per week.
